UC Eligibility Requirements for Freshman Admission

The University considers you a freshman applicant if you are still in high school or have graduated from high school but not have enrolled in a regular session at any college or university. If you attend a summer session immediately after graduating from high school, you are still considered a freshman applicant.

California Residents

There are three paths to satisfying the University's minimum admission requirements for freshman students:
  1. Eligibility in the Statewide Context - Students must complete specific coursework and college admissions tests and earned the required GPA and test scores.

  2. Eligibility in the Local Context - Students must rank in the top 4 percent of their graduating class at a participating California high school.

  3. Eligibility by Examination Alone - Students must achieve specified high scores on their college admissions tests.

Nonresidents

There are two paths to UC eligibility for nonresidents at the freshman level. The first is the same as described above under Eligibility in the Statewide Context and the second is the same as described above under Eligibility by Examination Alone, with the following exceptions:
  1. Scholarship Requirement:
Students satisfy the Scholarship Requirement with a GPA of 3.4 or above earned along with the test score indicated in the Eligibility Index under "Nonresidents."

  2. Admission by Examination Alone:
To be eligible by examination alone, nonresident students may be able to qualify for admission to the University by examination alone by achieving high scores on the SAT Reasoning Test (or ACT Assessment plus Writing) and two SAT Subject Tests. To qualify for Eligibility by Examination Alone, a student must achieve a minimum UC Score Total-calculated according to the Eligibility Index instructions-of 410 (425 for nonresidents). In addition, you must earn a minimum UC Score of 63 on each component of the ACT Assessment plus Writing or SAT Reasoning Test and on each SAT Subject Test.

You may not use an SAT Subject Test to meet these requirements if you have completed a transferable college course in that subject with a grade of C or better.

Minimum Eligibility vs. Selection

If the number of applicants exceeds the spaces available for a particular campus or major - as is often the case - the campus uses criteria that exceed the minimum requirements to select students. Meeting the minimum requirements, therefore, is not enough to gain admission to many UC campuses and programs. UC Irvine Admission Requirements
