2009 Summary of UCI Selection Requirements for California Community College Transfer Applicants


This information is valid for California community college transfers
wishing to apply to fall quarter 2009 or winter quarter 2010 (closed for winter 2010).

All information is subject to change. Students are advised to
contact the Office of Admissions and Relations with Schools for the most current information.

 

Basic Requirements: All course requirements for UC admissions must be completed with a minimum grade of C or better.

Additional Requirements for Each Major: All required courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C or better, unless otherwise specified.





BASIC REQUIREMENTS

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Claire Trevor School of the Arts
All majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall grade point average of 2.7
  • No specific course requirements

    Note: Dance and Music majors admitted by audition only. Transfer students must select another Arts major and may apply to Arts & Humanities early in their first year at UC Irvine.
School of Biological Sciences
All majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0
  • Complete one year of general chemistry with laboratory with a B or better in both semesters
  • Complete one year of general biology with laboratory equivalent to UC Irvine's BIO SCI 93, 94, and 100 lab with a grade of C of better

    Note: Admission to Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Developmental and Cell Biology, Genetics, Microbiology and Immunology, Neurobiology, or Plant Biology requires department approval for enrollment.
The Paul Merage School of Business
(New major open to transfers 2010)
All majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0
  • Courses in calculus equivalent to UC Irvine's Mathematics 2A-B
  • Courses in economics equivalent to UC Irvine's Economics 20A-B
  • Course in statistics and accounting equivalent to UC Irvine's Management 7, 30A, and 30B

    Note: Management 10 may be completed at UC Irvine
Business Information Management (Offered jointly by the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences) majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.8 and a minimum GPA of 2.8 in required courses
  • One year of discrete mathematics if available; if not, first-year calculus
  • One year of UC transferable computer science courses including at least one course involving concepts such as those found in C++, Java*, or another object-oriented, high-level programming language.
  • Complete one year of introductory accounting theory and practice
  • Complete one year of micro- and macro-economics theory

    Note: Java is used extensively in the curriculum; therefore, students should plan to learn it by studying on their own or by completing a Java-related programming course prior to their first quarter at UC Irvine.
The Henry Samueli School of Engineering
Aerospace Engineering and Mechanical Engineering majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.8 and a minimum GPA of 2.8 in required courses
  • Complete one year of calculus
  • Complete one year of calculus-based physics with laboratory (mechanics, electricity and magnetism)
  • Complete one course of general chemistry with laboratory
  • Complete two additional approved courses for the major
Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering: Premedical, Chemical Engineering, and Materials Science Engineering majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.8 and a minimum GPA of 2.8 in required courses
  • Complete one year of calculus
  • Complete one year of calculus-based physics with laboratory (mechanics, electricity and magnetism)
  • Complete one year of general chemistry with laboratory
  • Complete one additional approved course for the major
Civil Engineering majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.8 and a minimum GPA of 2.8 in required courses
  • Complete one year of calculus
  • Complete one year of calculus-based physics with laboratory (mechanics, electricity and magnetism) AND one course of general chemistry with laboratory OR complete one year of general chemistry with laboratory AND one course of calculus-based physics with laboratory (mechanics)
Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Engineering (General) majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.8 and a minimum GPA of 2.8 in required courses
  • Complete one year of calculus
  • Complete one year of calculus-based physics with laboratory (mechanics, electricity and magnetism)
  • Complete two additional approved courses for the major
Computer Science & Engineering (offered jointly with Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences) majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and a minimum GPA of 3.0 in required courses
  • Complete one year of calculus
  • Complete one year of calculus-based physics with labs (mechanics, electricity and magnetism)
  • Complete one year of programming with at least one course in object-oriented programming (Java recommended)
  • Complete one additional approved course for the CSE major
Environmental Engineering majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.8 and a minimum GPA of 2.8 in required courses
  • Complete one year of calculus
  • Complete one semester of calculus-based physics with laboratory (mechanics, electricity and magnetism)
  • Complete one year of general chemistry with laboratory
College of Health Sciences
Nursing Science majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0
  • One year of general chemistry with laboratory
  • One quarter or semester of organic chemistry
  • One year of biological sciences in addition to a course in DNA and a course in Genetics equivalent in DNA and a course in Genetics equivalent to UC Irvine's biological sciences 93 & 97
  • One course in molecular biology
  • One course in biochemistry
  • One course in statistics

    Note: Entry to Nursing Science major requires department approval which includes review of supplemental application for enrollment. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher to be considered.
Pharmaceutical Sciences majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0
  • Complete one year of general chemistry with lab
  • One year of general biology with lab with a grade of "B" or better in required courses

    Note: Fall 2009 applicants interested in this major should apply as a biological sciences major. For more information on biological sciences, refer to the School of Biological Sciences section.
Public Health Policy majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and a minimum GPA of 3.0 in required courses
  • Complete one year of courses in anthropology, economics, sociology, and/or psychology
Public Health Sciences majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and a minimum GPA of 3.0 in required courses
  • Complete one year of general biology and one year of general chemistry with laboratory
School of Humanities
All majors, except Humanities and Arts; Humanities (interdisciplinary):
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.7
  • No specific course requirements

    Note: New students are not admitted directly to the Humanities and Arts or Humanities Interdisciplinary majors. Transfer students must select another Humanities major, and may apply to these interdisciplinary majors early in their first year at UC Irvine.
Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences
Business Information Management (Offered jointly by The Paul Merage School of Business) majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.8 and a minimum GPA of 2.8 in required courses
  • One year of discrete mathematics if available; if not, first-year calculus
  • One year of UC transferable computer science courses including at least one course involving concepts such as those found in C++, Java*, or another object-oriented, high-level programming language.
  • Complete one year of introductory accounting theory and practice
  • Complete one year of micro- and macro-economics theory

    Note: See note regarding Java at the end of this section.
Computer Science and Information and Computer Science majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.8 and a minimum GPA of 2.8 in required courses
  • Complete one year of college mathematics equivalent to discrete mathematics if available; if not, first-year calculus
  • One year of UC transferable computer science courses including at least one course involving concepts such as those found in C++, Java*, or another object-oriented, high-level programming language.
    Note: See note regarding Java at the end of this section.
Computer Science & Engineering (offered jointly with The Henry Samueli School of Engineering) majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.8 and a minimum GPA of 2.8 in required courses
  • Complete one year of calculus
  • Complete one year of calculus-based physics with labs (mechanics, electricity and magnetism)
  • Complete one year of programming with at least one course in object-oriented programming (Java recommended)
  • Complete one additional approved course for the CSE major
Informatics majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.8 and a minimum GPA of 2.8 in required courses
  • Complete one year of approved college mathematics; courses equivalent to discrete mathematics, statistics, or symbolic logic are strongly preferred.
    (Note: a semester each of precalculus and calculus is not sufficient to satisfy this requirement. Informatics majors are encouraged to take Boolean algebra, statistics, or symbolic logic, if available, to facilitate course planning after transfer.)
  • Complete one year of transferable computer science courses involving concepts such as those found in C++, Java*, or another object-oriented, high-level programming language.

    Note: Java is used extensively in the curriculum; therefore, students should plan to learn it by studying on their own or by completing a Java-related programming course prior to their first quarter at UC Irvine.
Interdisciplinary Studies
Business Information Management (Offered jointly by The Paul Merage School of Business) majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.8 and a minimum GPA of 2.8 in required courses
  • One year of discrete mathematics if available; if not, first-year calculus
  • One year of UC transferable computer science courses including at least one course involving concepts such as those found in C++, Java*, or another object-oriented, high-level programming language.
  • Complete one year of introductory accounting theory and practice
  • Complete one year of micro- and macro-economics theory

    Note: See note regarding Java at the end of this section.
Computer Science and Engineering (joint program with The Henry Samueli School of Engineering and the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.8 and a minimum GPA of 2.8 in required courses
  • Complete one year of calculus
  • Complete one year of calculus-based physics with laboratory (mechanics, electricity and magnetism)
  • Complete one year of programming with at least one course in object-oriented programming (Java recommended)
  • Complete one additional approved course for the major

    Note: Since Java is used extensively in the curriculum, students who come in without the ability to program in Java should plan to learn it, by studying on their own or by taking a Java programming course.
School of Physical Sciences
Chemistry majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.8
  • Complete one year of general chemistry with laboratory with minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Complete one year of approved calculus with minimum GPA of 3.0
Earth and Environmental Science majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.8
  • Complete one year of general chemistry with laboratory OR one year of calculus-based physics with laboratory with minimum of GPA of 3.0
  • Complete one year of approved calculus with minimum of GPA of 3.0
Mathematics majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.8
  • Complete one year of approved calculus with minimum of GPA of 3.0
Physics majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.8
  • Complete one year of calculus-based physics with laboratory with minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Complete one year of approved calculus with minimum of GPA of 3.0
School of Social Ecology
Social Ecology majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.7
Criminology, Law and Society and Psychology and Social Behavior majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0
  • No specific course requirements
School of Social Sciences
Business Economics, Economics, and Quantitative Economics majors must:
  • Complete 60 transferable semester units prior to the start of the intended quarter
  • Meet all course requirements for UC admission
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.80
  • Complete one year of micro- and macro-economics theory with a B average
  • Complete one semester or two quarters of approved calculus with a B average

    Note: For Fall 2010, transfer requirements for all majors in Economics are the following: one course in micro-economics, one course in macro-economics, and two quarters of calculus (equivalent to UC Irvine's Math 2A and 2B) OR two semesters of calculus.
