- A record number of 34,385 applicants applied for fall 2003 admission,
a 1.2% increase over fall 2002
- 18,498 applicants were offered admission, a 2.8% increase over fall 2002
- UCI expects to enroll a freshman class of 4,100 new students

Range of Test Scores and GPA
Students admitted to UCI have a demonstrated record of academic and
personal achievement. While UCI does not utilize a formula in selecting
students, students admitted for the fall 2002 term share the following
characteristics:
- An average high school grade point average (GPA) of 3.86 (note: UCI
uses a maximum of 8 honors grade points in determining the GPA)
- The middle 50% of the admitted class has an SAT Verbal score between
570 and 660 and a Mathematics score between 580 and 690
- The average number of "a-g " courses (full-year) completed in
grades 9 - 12 is 22
- 96% of all students completed at least four years of mathematics
- The typical student offered admission completed five (full-year)
academic courses in the senior year

Distribution by Diversity and Geographical Area
- The largest number of freshmen students will be enrolling from Los
Angeles County, followed by Orange County, the Bay Area counties,
Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, and San Diego and Imperial Counties
- The largest proportion of entering freshmen will start UCI as
undecided/undeclared freshmen (23%), followed by Biological Sciences (22%),
Engineering (13%), Social Science (9%), Humanities (9%), Information and
Computer Science (8%), Social Ecology (7%), Arts (5%), and Physical
Sciences (5%)
- Various ethnicities are represented in the enrolling freshmen class
as follows:
African-American 2.2%;
Mexican-American 8.1%;
Spanish-American 2.6%;
American Indian 0.4%;
Asian-American 53.4%;
White/Caucasian 25.1%;
Other 1.7%; and
Decline to State 6.5%
