Do I need to take the Analytical Writing Placement Examination? Placement Exams?

ANALYTICAL WRITING AND PLACEMENT EXAMS

UC Analytical Writing Placement Exam, May 10, 2008
If you are a freshman student entering UCI in fall quarter, 2008, you must take the UC Analytical Writing Placement Exam on May 10, 2008. Enrollment in any English composition course at UC Irvine is dependent upon the results of this exam, unless UC Irvine has on record by April 1, 2008, that you have met the Analytical Writing requirement through one of the following options:

  1. You have received a score of 30 or better on the ACT Combined English/Writing test; or
  2. You have received a score of 680 or better on the College Board SAT-II Writing Test; or
  3. You have received a score of 680 or better on the College Board SAT Reasoning Test, Writing section; or
  4. You have received a score of 3, 4, or 5 on either of the two College Board Advanced Placement Examinations in English; or
  5. You have received a score of 5 or above on the International Baccalaureate's (IB) Higher Level English A Examination; or
  6. You have received a score of 6 or above on the International Baccalaureate's (IB) Standard Level English A Examination; or
  7. You have completed a transferable college English composition course with a grade of "C" or better; or
  8. You have achieved a satisfactory ACT, SAT Writing or AP English score
ALL STUDENTS WHO HAVE NOT SATISFIED THE ANALYTICAL WRITING PLACEMENT EXAM BY ONE OF THE ABOVE OPTIONS are required to take the UC Analytical Writing Placement Exam before they can enroll in any required writing course at UC Irvine. For out-of-State students and students unable to take the May 10 exam, the exam will also be given on campus during Welcome Week in September. Be advised, however, that if you wait until Welcome Week to take the exam, you will not be able to enroll in a writing course until winter quarter, 2009 at the earliest.

REGARDLESS OF YOUR UC ANALYTICAL WRITING PLACEMENT EXAM RESULTS, they do not affect your admissibility to UC Irvine. If you have any questions regarding the Analytical Writing Placement Examination, please check the UC Analytical Writing Placement Exam web page at www.ucop.edu/sas/awpe/ or call (800) 839-8507, or contact your high school counselor. You may call the UC Irvine Testing Office at (949) 824-6207 to register for the Welcome Week (September 2008) exam. If you have questions about UC Irvine's preparatory writing courses, call the Composition Office at (949)824-6717.

Placement Exams
UC Irvine administers placement examinations to new students to ensure correct placement in certain introductory courses.

EXAMS ARE OFFERED IN chemistry, mathematics (precalculus and mathematical analysis), physics, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Vietnamese, and English-As-A-Second-Language. All necessary placement exams should be completed before you attend an academic advising session; therefore, we strongly recommend that you take your placement exams as early as possible.

How do I change my major? Why was I admitted to an alternate major?

Major

The major you have been admitted to is indicated on your admission letter.

Alternate Major

In most cases, applicants are admitted to their first-choice major. Because of enrollment criteria for certain majors, it is possible that you have been admitted to an "alternate-choice" major. Please note that to change to your "first-choice" major after enrolling at UC Irvine requires approval from the dean or director of the applicable school or program. This approval is neither automatic nor guaranteed. You should contact the academic counseling office for your preferred major to obtain information on change-of-major policies.
