Impressive Anteaters

Many UCI graduates have gone on to achieve great things. Here are just a few of those Anteaters:
  • Michael Chabon, a graduate of UCI's Creative Writing Program in the School of Humanities, was awarded the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for fiction for his novel THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF KAVALIER & CLAY.

  • Jon Lovitz, of Saturday Night Live fame, is a UCI Arts graduate from 1979.

  • Four-time Olympic Gold Medalist Greg Louganis graduated in 1983 from UCI with a B.A. in Drama and a minor in Dance.

  • Actor Jeff Meek graduated from UCI with a B.A. in Drama. Meek has starred in several TV series, including Raven and Breaking the Surface: the Greg Louganis Story, and is active in local stage productions.

  • Denis Bilodeau, P.E., Executive Assistant to Orange Country Third District Supervisor Todd Spitzer, graduated with a B.S. in Civil Engineering.

  • Whitney Otto, author of How to Make An American Quilt and Now You See Her, graduated from UCI with a B.A. in English.

  • Richard Ford, 1996 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction for Independence Day, graduated with an M.F.A. in English in 1970.

  • Yusef Komunyakaa, 1994 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry for "Neon Vernacular," graduated in 1980 with an M.F.A. in English.

  • Scott Andrews, living the good life in Japan, graduated with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from UCI and went on to study at Stanford University and earned an M.S.E.E.

  • Steve Scott, American record holder for the indoor mile (3:58.7) and world record holder for the most sub-four minute miles (136), graduated from UCI in 1978 with a B.A. in Social Ecology.

  • Michael Ramirez, 1994 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in the Memphis Commerical Appeal, graduated from UCI with a double B.A. in Studio Art and Art History.

  • Gary Figueroa, one of several water polo Anteater Gold Medalists in the 1984 Olympics, graduated from UCI in 1980 with a B.A. in Social Sciences.

  • Julie Justus, Aide to former California Governor Pete Wilson, graduated from UCI in 1987 with double B.A.'s in Social Ecology and Political Science.

  • Elizabeth "Buffy" Rabbitt, NCAA All-American in Cross Country, gradua ted from UCI in 1991 with double majors in Psychology and Comparative Literature.

  • Thomas Yuen, co-founder of AST Research Incorporated, graduated from UCI in 1974 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering.

  • T. Jefferson Parker, noted fiction writer and author of Laguna Heat, Little Saigon, and Pacific Heat graduated with an M.F.A. in English in 1976.

  • Eileen Moore, Court of Appeals Judge, graduated in 1975 with a B.A. in History.

  • William Leonard, former California State Senator, graduated in 1969 with a B.A. in History.

  • Over 400 All-Americans have attended UCI since 1965. Twenty-four former UCI student-athletes and coaches have participated in a total of 36 Olympic Game eve nts, including four water polo players on each of the last three U.S. Olympic teams. Seven former Anteaters participated in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Other notabl e student-athletes who have competed at UCI include Olympic Diving Gold Medalist Jennifer Chandler; World Long-Jump record-holder Mike Powell; Baltimore Orioles outfielder Brady Anderson; and NBA basketball player Scott Brooks, a member of the 1994 World Champion Houston Rockets and now with the Dallas Mavericks.
