International Admission to UC IrvineApplying for AdmissionAs an undergraduate, a student may apply for admission as a freshman or a transfer. You are a freshman applicant if you completed secondary school and have not enrolled in a regular session at any college or university. You are a transfer applicant if you completed secondary school and enrolled in a college or university. You may not disregard any college record. Admission to UC Irvine is competitive and selective in several majors.
Academic RequirementsAll schools attended since the beginning of secondary school must be reported on the UC application when the student applies. This will assist UC Irvine in determining the student's status (freshman or transfer).To be considered for admission to UCI as a freshman, international students must have completed secondary school with a superior average in academic subjects and have earned a certificate of completion which enables the student to be admitted to a university in the home country. Students who have attended school under the British system must present 5 GCSE/Ordinary level examinations and at least 2 Advanced level examinations with superior grades. Results of Advanced Subsidiary or Higher Level Exams should also be submitted. To be considered for admission to UCI as a transfer student, international students should have completed the equivalent of two years of post-secondary course work. The transferability of credits and grades will be determined by the Office of Admissions and Relations with Schools at UCI.
Transcripts/Official RecordsUC Irvine requires records of all secondary schools attended, showing subjects taken and grades received as well as any national or government certificates earned. Documents of all college or university coursework must also be sent in the original language, along with English translations. Do not send these documents unless UC Irvine requests them. If you apply and are admitted to the University, your admission packet will contain instructions about sending us your original records.
Freshman Test RequirementsFreshman applicants entering UC Irvine as freshmen in fall 2009 are required to take the ACT Assessment plus Writing or the SAT Reasoning Test (critical reading, mathematics and writing) plus two SAT Subject Tests in two different subject areas: history, literature, mathematics (Level 2 only), science, or language other than English.Freshman applicants who graduated from high school in spring 2005 or earlier are required to have taken the SAT I: Reasoning Test (or ACT) and three SAT II: Subject Tests prior to high school graduation. You should request that your test scores be sent directly to the UC Irvine Undergraduate Admissions Office. Information about these examinations is available online, at www.collegeboard.com for the SAT Reasoning and SAT Subject Tests and at www.act.org for the ACT Assessment plus Writing.
English Proficiency (All Students)UC Irvine requires proficiency in English before a student can be admitted. Generally, this proficiency can be demonstrated with a score of 550 or better on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) paper-based, or 213 on computer-based or a score of 7 on the IELTS (International English Language Testing System).Institutional tests are not acceptable. For other methods of proving English proficiency, contact the Office of Admissions and Relations with Schools. Your proficiency in English is critical to your success at UC Irvine. Have your scores forwarded by the testing service to the UC Irvine Admissions Office. Refer to TOEFL Online or IELTS Online for information about test dates, practice questions, and study materials. If you are admitted to UC Irvine and your native language is not English, we may require you to take the English as a Second Language Placement Exam before the term in which you enter. If your score indicates a weakness in English, several terms of your program may include special courses in English for international students.
Financial Information
* Fees are subject to change without notice. This is a conservative estimate of a budget for an undergraduate Non-California resident living on campus. On-campus housing is limited. Should it be necessary to live off campus, students can expect their expenses to be approximately the same. The above budget is a modest one which includes several variable figures and will differ for each student. In order to cover contingencies that may arise, a student will be well advised to have at least $44,455 available for the three quarters, and at least $59,270 available if the students plans to attend Summer Session, or remain in the United States for the summer. Generally, UC Irvine does not award scholarships or financial aid to undergraduate students who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States. UC Irvine also requires that all international students on non-immigrant visas have adequate medical insurance during all periods of enrollment.
