Preparations While in High School
(Juniors and Seniors)

There are several components to being not only eligible to the University of California, Irvine, but to being a competitive applicant. Among other things, you need to:
  1. have completed a strong academic preparation
  2. have strong test scores
  3. be an all-around, involved student
  4. be able to think independently and critically
  5. have good study habits

  • The Courses: This is a definition of the minimum pattern of high school courses a student must be taking in preparation for consideration for admission to the University. This is called the "a - g pattern" of courses or the subject requirement.

  • Scholarship and Honors Courses: This explains how your course and grades come together to create a grade point average used to determine UC eligibility; and it defines what honors courses are (by University of California definition) and their importance.

  • Tests: This shows you the required pattern of tests used with your courses and grades for UC eligibility.

  • Selection of freshmen students: This explains how UC Irvine selects freshmen students. This is an important page so be sure to view the material carefully.

  • Preparing to write the personal statement: As the time for actually applying comes close, you may wish to review the components of a strong personal statement or essay, since you will need to write one. This will show you what a convincing statement is... and what it is not!
