Applying to UCI - Transfer

UC Irvine Admissions Requirements

English Language Proficiency Requirement
Applicants whose native language is not English, and whose high school or college/university education was in a country where the language of instruction was not English, must provide evidence of English proficiency to be successful in university studies at UCI.

photo Various examinations may be used to demonstrate proficiency in English.  The minimum accepted score for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is 80 on the Internet-based test, 213 on the computer-based test, and 550 on the paper-based test.

Applicants may also demonstrate English proficiency in any of the following ways:

  • Score 3, 4 or 5 on the AP examination in English Language and Composition or English Literature and Composition;
  • Score 5, 6 or 7 on the IB Higher Level Examination in English (Language A);
  • Score 6 or higher on the IB Standard Level Examination in English (Language A);
  • Score 7 or higher on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS);
  • Score 560 or higher on the SAT Reasoning Test, Writing section.



For Transfer Applicants – Important items before you apply to UC Irvine

  1. Required College/University Courses
    • 60 semester (90 quarter) units
    • two transferable college courses in English composition
    • one transferable college course in mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning
    • four transferable college courses from at least two of the following subject areas: the arts and humanities, the social and behavioral sciences, and the physical and biological sciences
    • some majors have additional prerequisites; please check at the international admissions link on www.admissions.uci.edu
  2. Examination Requirements
    • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
    • TOEFL: 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based), 80 (internet-based) www.toefl.org
    • IELTS: 7 (academic module) www.ielts.org
  3. Application
    • web application is available in early October at www.universityofcalifornia.edu/apply
    • application submission deadline is November 30
    • application fee: $70 (nonrefundable)
    • do not send recommendation letters
    • send in your official transcript when you are asked by the Admissions Office or after you are admitted.
