UC Irvine in General
- Where can I find information about the size of UC Irvine's student body, student/teacher ratio, type of setting, etc.?
- UC Irvine's Office of Analytical Studies and Information Management publishes various statistics about UC Irvine's student body.
- Does UC Irvine have a business program?
- Five avenues of academic preparation in business are available at UC Irvine with major and/or minor courses of study in: business administration, business economics, business information management, accounting, and management. These degree and minor programs are offered by The Paul Merage School of Business, Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, and the School of Social Sciences. For detailed information on how you can prepare for a business or management career at UC Irvine, please visit "Preparing for a Career in Business or Management (PDF)".
- Does UC Irvine have a pre-med major?
- Contrary to common belief, "premedicine" usually is not an academic major. The term "premedicine" refers, rather, to the body of undergraduate coursework that all students must take in order to be considered to the medical, dental, pharmacy, optometry, podiatry, or veterinary school. Since these fields are studied at the graduate level, you first need to work toward your bachelor's degree. For information on how you can get on track for one of these careers at UC Irvine, visit "Medicine and Other Health Professions (PDF)".
- Does UC Irvine offer services to disabled students?
- The UC Irvine Disability Services Center provides effective and reasonable academic accomodations and related disability services to UC Irvine students, Extension and Summer Session students, and other program participants. Specific information about these services can be found at www.disability.uci .edu or by contacting their office:
Disability Services Center University of California, Irvine Irvine, CA 92697-5250 (949) 824-7494 (voice) (949) 824-6272 (TDD) (949) 824-3083 (FAX) email: dcs@uci.edu
- Are any classes offered online?
- UC Irvine's Distance Learning Center offers a limited number of programs online. Visit their website at http://unex.uci.edu/ (click on the "Online Programs" tab) to view program offerings.
- How much does it cost to attend UC Irvine?
- The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships website provides a sample budget for approximating the cost of attending UC Irvine. Their website can be found at www.ofas.uci.edu.

Freshman Admission Issues
- As a freshman student, what are my chances of graduating in four years?
- The average time to graduate is four years and one quarter. The median amount of time to complete a degree is four years; this means that half of the UCI students complete their requirements and graduate in four years or less.
- Are most classes big (over 50 people) or are they intimate (less than 25)? Are there TAs?
- The average class size is 31 students. The number of courses with fewer than 30 students is 71%, and 79% with fewer than 50 students. The student/faculty ratio is approximately 19:1. Yes, graduate students serve as TAs for some classes, conducting what are called "discussion sections." In general, professors teach the lecture section of a class two to three times a week and teaching assistants augment the lecture with a discussion once a week.
- Does UCI require the SAT Subject tests or SAT II Subject tests? If so, which ones?
- All students applying for freshman admission must submit the following college admissions test scores:
- The SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT With Writing.
- SAT Subject Test scores are no longer required. However, submission of SAT Subject Test scores may add positively to the review of a student's application. See the Examination Requirement section in the UC Irvine general catalog
for SAT Subject Test recommendations at www.editor.uci.edu/catalogue/.
- I am a high school student and I have taken some classes at a community college. Can I use those classes on my freshman application? Can I also get degree credit for them?
- Transferable courses taken at a community college are awarded extra grade points in the admission process, just as Advanced Placement and certified honors courses are; however, the university limits the number of honors-level courses that a student can accrue to eight semesters. In addition to the extra grade points earned, units from transferable community college courses are applied toward overall units required for a student's college degree.
- Does UCI accept General Education Development (GED) diplomas?
- If a student does not have a high school diploma, the university will accept the GED certificate, in place of a diploma. However, a student must still meet the Subject, Scholarship and Examination requirements. UCI also accepts California Certificate of Proficiency.
- How does UCI use Advanced Placement credit?
- Students who earn scores of 3, 4, or 5 on the College Board Advanced Placement Examinations will receive credit toward graduation at UCI. The unit and subject credit allowed toward degree requirements assigned to each test are shown in the UCI General Catalogue available online at www.editor.uci.edu/catalogue/.

Transfer Admission Issues
- I attend a four-year college/university. Where can I find information about transfer requirements for me?
- Transfer students from four-year colleges/universities will be considered for admission on a space-available basis. However, the University of California gives priority consideration to students transferring from California community colleges. In general, admission requirements for both community college and other four-year transfer applicants are the same, with the exception that students from four-year colleges must have a 2.8 minimum GPA. Additionally, individual majors may have specific GPA requirements for admission that well exceed 2.80, as well as specific prerequisite requirements.
Information on transferring to the university is published annually in the UCI General Catalogue available online at www.editor.uci.edu/catalogue. Also visit www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions.
- Does UCI accept transfers at the freshman or sophomore level?
- In general, UCI admits transfer students at the junior level (junior = transfer students with a minimum of 60 UC transferable semester units).
- How do I know if my courses are transferable?
- UC Irvine maintains both Transfer Course Agreements and Articulation Agreements with California community colleges. These agreements identify courses that are UC transferable as well as those that satisfy specific requirements for individual majors and for UCI's General Education Requirement. To determine which courses transfer and/or satisfy requirements for specific majors, visit the ASSIST Website at www.assist.org. Click on the "Start ASSIST" link and follow the instructions.
- What about IGETC?
- The completion of IGETC is not required for admission to UCI, although courses you have taken in fulfillment of IGETC may also be used to fulfill UC admission requirements. You must select an academic major, and you also may specify an alternate major, for which you will be considered if you meet its requirements and if space permits. Once you are admitted to UCI, any change of major you wish to make will be dependent upon your successfully completing the requirements for that major and receiving the permission of the academic department that offers that major.

The UC Application
- What are the most common application errors?
- Name used on application is not the applicant's legal name: It is important that you use your legal name on the application form.
- Name used on the application does not match the name used for exams (SAT, ACT, and Advanced Placement): Problems occur when UCI cannot match an applicant's test score results with the application because the names do not match. It's best to use your legal name for both the application form and your exams.
- Incorrect College Board code used for school(s) attended: It is important that you list the correct College Board codes on your application for the schools you attended. Often an applicant will list his/her school's College Board code incorrectly on the school page of the application. Although the school's name is listed beside the code, the College Board code is entered in the application record; if this code is incorrect, the application will not indicate the school listed in the name field and the school in our record will be wrong.
- Scores have not been "released" to UC Irvine: Once you are offered admission to UC Irvine and you have returned your Statement of Intent to Register (SIR), official test scores must be submitted. In many cases the testing agency has not been properly authorized to release an individual's test scores to UC Irvine, hence, the final steps in the admission process can be delayed. This can result in a "hold" being placed on your registration until the scores are received or event withdrawal of the admission offer. It may also require that you order and pay for duplicate score reports.
- Year of Birth: A common error is that applicants will indicate the current year as the year of birth (i.e., "2013" instead of "1996").
- Applicants fail to list ALL schools attended since 9th grade: Even schools outside the USA and even schools where course work may have not been transferable or completed must be included on the School section. This is important information for evaluation purposes and failure to list all schools could result in delay of the admission process and/or cancellation.
- Can you send me an application form?
- All undergraduate applications are filed online at www.universityofcalifornia.edu/apply.
- Can I use the same application form for more than one UC campus?
- Yes. You may apply to multiple UC campuses using a single application form. The fee is $70/$80 per campus.
- Can I have the application fee waived?
- There are several ways to apply for a fee waiver. To qualify, you must meet the same income and family size guidelines, regardless of the method of application you use. If you are a high school student, use the College Board fee waiver available from your school counselor. If you are a qualified community college student, you may qualify for a fee waiver through the EOPS (Extended Opportunity Programs and Services program). Other students may be eligible for a UC fee waiver authorization, which is available at any UC Admissions, Relations with Schools, or EOP office. If you are unable to obtain a UC fee waiver authorization, you may simply attach a letter to your application stating your gross family income and the number of family members supported by that income and request consideration for a fee waiver.
- How do I know UCI got my application?
- About four weeks after the university receives your application, you should receive an acknowledgement in the mail from the UC Undergraduate Application Processing Service indicating that your application form and fees were received along with your application ID number.
The University of California provides a Web site where you may check your application status online. The URL is admission.universityofcalifornia.edu.
UC Irvine provides a Web site where you may view the status of your UC Irvine application. If you provided a valid e-mail address on your UC application, UC Irvine will send you an e-mail notifying you that your application has been received. This e-mail will include instructions on how to access your UC Irvine application status. This notification process typically begins in mid-December. We strongly advise that you do not change your e-mail address during the application/admissions cycle; however, if you must change your e-mail address, please notify us at MyAdmissionsApplication@UCI.
If you are concerned that your application may not have reached us, please telephone our office at (949) 824-6703 during normal business hours.
- How does UCI calculate the GPA?
- For freshmen, UCI uses the University of California GPA calculation guidelines which are outlined in the UC Application for Admission, however, UCI limits the number of extra points awarded certified Honors and Advanced Placement courses to a maximum of eight semesters. For transfer students, the GPA is calculated using your transferable course work only.
- Does UCI accept applications for winter or spring term?
- UCI is typically closed for winter quarter; however, there may be an occasion for UCI to be open for winter quarter for a limited group of applicants. The filing period for a winter quarter is during the month of July, and generally the decision to accept applications (or not) for winter quarter is posted on the University of California Web site in June. Enrollment opportunities at the UCI campus, including which majors and academic programs are available for new applicants, is available at admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/how-to-apply/check-majors/.
UC Irvine does not accept applications for spring quarter.
- I've already submitted my application. How do I add the Irvine campus to my list of choices if I did not initially select it?
- Do not submit a second application form; it will not be processed. Instead, submit your request in writing to the central processing service at the following address:
University of California Undergraduate Application Processing Service P.O. Box 4010 Concord, CA 94524-4010
Be sure to note your application ID number, Social Security number, the additional campus(es) to which you wish to apply, major(s), major code(s), and include a check or money order for $70 ($80 for international applicants) for each additional campus you select, payable in U.S. dollars to the "Regents of the University of California." You may not substitute new campus choices for your original choices. Your request will be processed only if the campus(es) you choose has space available. The processing service will notify you about whether your application was accepted.
- I have taken the SAT/ACT exams more than once. Does UC Irvine use my highest scores?
- Yes. UC Irvine will use the highest composite score from a single sitting, if it is reported to us. NOTE: Make sure that you have each score released to us that you intend to be part of your application record. Complications commonly arise for applicants who have not released their scores and/or who have only released part of their scores.
- Does UCI need my transcripts?
- Not immediately. First, we will evaluate your application based on the information you provided on your application. Then, if you are offered admission to UC Irvine, you will be asked to have official copies of your transcripts sent to us by the deadline date. All transcripts must be official, sealed by the appropriate school and must arrive to UC Irvine unopened.
- Where do I send transcripts or letters of recommendation?
- UC
Irvine will evaluate your application based on the academic record you
reported in your application. If your are admitted to UC Irvine, you
will then be requested to submit official copies of your transcripts and
test scores (for freshman applicants), to verify your academic record.
Letters of recommendation are not accepted.
- Does UCI need my fall semester grades or work planned for spring semester (work in progress)?
- UC Irvine does not routinely ask for fall semester grades or work planned for spring semester; however, if this information is needed in order to make an admissions decision, the counselor evaluating your records will request it. If you have earned grades of less than "C" in any transferable course in the fall semester, or have changed your schedule for the spring semester, it would expedite the review of your application to send this information as soon as possible.
- When are dance auditions held?
- Auditions are scheduled by the Claire Trevor School of the Arts staff and begin in January. Contact Amy Kim, Director of Student Affairs, at (949) 824-6646 for more information, or e-mail amykim@uci.edu.

- How do I change my major?
- The deadline to request a major change through the Admissions office is June 1 at 9 a.m. You must submit your request on the Message Center at MyAdmissionsApplication@UCI. Your Admissions Counselor will notify you if it is approved. Approval depends on whether you qualify for that new major and whether space is available in the major. If you miss the June 1 deadline, you may be able to change your major at summer orientation (SPOP), provided the new major is accepting major changes. It's also possible to change majors after you've taken some classes at UCI. Discuss this with your Academic Counselor when you attend summer orientation.
- How do I notify UCI of a failed course (D or F grade)?
- Freshmen are responsible for reporting all D or F grades earned in the
seventh
semester, in writing, as soon as
possible. You may use the Message Center in MyAdmissionsApplication@UCI as well. In some cases we may be able
to advise you of options that
will enable you to remain UC-eligible. If you do not use the message center, be sure to include your UC

- UC Analytical Writing Placement Exam: May 11, 2013
- If you are a freshman student entering UCI in fall quarter 2013, you must take the UC Analytical Writing Placement Exam on May 11, 2013. Enrollment in any English composition course at UC Irvine is dependent upon the results of this exam, unless UC Irvine has on record by April 1, 2013, that you have met the Entry Level Writing Requirement through one of the following options:
- You have received a score of 30 or better on the ACT Combined English/Writing test; or

- All students who have not satisfied the Entry Level Writing Requirement by one of the above options are required to take the UC Analytical Writing Placement Exam before they can enroll in any required writing course at UCI. For out-of-state students and students unable to take the May 11 exam, the exam will also be given on campus during Welcome Week in September. Be advised, however, that if you wait until Welcome Week to take the exam, you will not be able to enroll in a writing course until winter quarter 2014 at the earliest.
- Regardless of your UC Analytical Writing Placement Exam results, they do not affect your admissibility to UCI. If you have any questions regarding the Analytical Writing Placement Examination, please check the UC Analytical Writing Placement Exam web page at www.ucop.edu/elwr/ or call (800) 839-8507, or contact your high school counselor. - Why was I admitted to an alternate major?
- In most cases, applicants are admitted to their first-choice major. Because of enrollment criteria for certain majors, it is possible that you have been admitted to an "alternate-choice" major. Please note that to change to your "first-choice" major after enrolling at UC Irvine requires approval from the dean or director of the applicable school or program. This approval is neither automatic nor guaranteed. You should contact the academic counseling office for your preferred major to obtain information on change-of-major policies.
- How can I attend UCI's Summer Session?
- All entering students are automatically sent a preview of summer session courses in late spring. Over 400 courses are offered in the six- and 10-week sessions. Summer Session courses may be used to satisfy various University, GE, and major requirements. Course offerings include preparatory or first-year chemistry and math, as well as Writing 39A which fulfills the Entry Level Writing Requirement. During the summer, intensive language courses fulfilling a year's language requirement are also offered. Coursework taken at UC Irvine Summer Session will be recorded on your UC Irvine transcript. For further information, contact the UC Irvine Summer Session Office, P.O. Box 6050, Irvine, CA 92616-6050; telephone (949) 824-5493; e-mail: summer-session@uci.edu; Web site: www.summer.uci.edu.
- How do I Finish-in-Four?
- Entering freshmen should plan to complete their course of study in four years. Students who wish to be assured of earning their degree in a timely manner should contact the academic counseling office for their major to receive information about Finish-in-Four Advising and assistance in developing a detailed curricular plan.

Miscellaneous Items You Want to Know
- Can high school students take classes at UCI? (concurrent enrollment)
- High school students can take classes at UCI:
- University Extension's ACCESS UCI program - This option is ideal for either (1) well-prepared high school seniors who have exhausted the curriculum available in high school and who are looking for advanced level coursework, or (2) students who are seeking an enrichment course or coursework not available at their high school. For information, call (949) 824-1010; e-mail: unex-services@uci.edu; ACCESS Web site: unex.uci.edu/courses/access_uci.
- UCI's Summer Session Program - This option enables highly qualified high school seniors to enroll in regular UCI courses. For further information, contact the UCI Summer Session Office at (949) 824-5493; e-mail: summer-session@uci.edu; or visit the Summer Session Web site at www.summer.uci.edu.
Admission and enrollment in courses either through ACCESS UCI or Summer Session does not also mean admission to UCI as an entering freshman. To enter as freshmen, high school seniors are required to complete and submit the official University of California Application for Undergraduate Admission and Scholarships during November of the year prior to the fall quarter in which they seek to enroll.
- Very Important Information About Test Scores
- Freshman applicants entering UC Irvine in fall 2013 must submit official test scores to UC Irvine for the following tests:
- the ACT With Writing, OR
- the SAT Reasoning Test* (critical reading, mathematics, and writing)
- SAT Subject Test scores are no longer required. However, submission of SAT Subject Test scores may add positively to the review of a student's application.
- * The critical reading, mathematics, and writing scores on the SAT must be from the same sitting. Students who take the ACT must report their scores on each section of the test as well as their composite score.
- IMPORTANT: See the UC Irvine general catalog for additional information and SAT Subject Test recommendations at www.editor.uci.edu/catalogue/.
To ensure that UC Irvine receives your test result information on time, so that your application does not have a "hold" placed on it, or your admission offer withdrawn, due to nonreceipt of the results, please review the items below, which describe what you can do to help assure an on-time receipt:
-
- Did you use the same name on both your undergraduate application and on all of your tests? Or, did you use another form of your name, or a nickname? If the latter, immediately notify UC Irvine of the additional names used.
- When reviewing your test scores(s), make sure there are no spelling errors in your name on the score report(s). If you find a misspelling, advise UC Irvine of the precise misspelling.
- Do your test score report(s) show your correct Social Security Number and birth date? If not, let UC Irvine know what discrepancies you find in those data points. Also, let UC Irvine know if either the Social Security Number or your birth date is missing from your score report(s).
- If you have a SAT II Subject Test report, check to see if it has a pound sign ("#") placed before the names of the exams that you took. If you find a "#," it means that you need to release your score report to UCI. To do that, call (866) 756-7346 and ask them to release the score(s).
- If you took test(s) in two or more separate years, you must state you want the score results for all years to be sent/released to UC Irvine. Otherwise, the testing service will release only one year of results. UC Irvine considers the highest scores from a single administration.
Also note that AP exam scores will not be accepted via high school or college transcripts.
